‘Big Hero 6’ is the most underrated superhero movie in recent years.  The fact that it was an animated Disney movie may have turned off some older comic book fans and that it came out while ‘Frozen’ was still slaying the box office distracted family audiences from this wonderful, action-packed, heartwarming adventure.

But the moviegoers that did experience this film fell in love with it, creating a small but passionate fan base.  (To be fair, the movie went on to generate $600 million worldwide.)  But considering that ‘Big Hero 6‘ kind of got lost in the shuffle made many wonder if Disney would ever revisit this story.  Good news!  They are!  ‘Big Hero 6’ is returning as an ongoing animated series set to air on Disney XD.  The show will be produced by Mark McKorckle and Bob Schooley, the creators/showrunners of prior Disney hit ‘Kim Possible’.

The new series will debut in 2017.

Disney Channel Worlwide’s President & CCO Gary Marsh announced:

Sunfire_&_Big_Hero_6_No.1“Our colleagues at Walt Disney Animation Studios have created a brilliant new world, inspired by Marvel, with vivid, unique characters,” said Marsh. “We are thrilled to have the opportunity to further develop these characters into a world class animated series – full of fun, action and the kind of endearing storytelling that only Mark, Bob – and  Baymax – can deliver.”

Some may not realize that ‘Big Hero 6’ was based on an actual Marvel Comic book, a spin-off of sorts from the ‘X-Men’ line, featuring former-X-Man Sunfire and villain Silver Samurai.  Those two characters were completely omitted from the movie version and the characters that were included were radically redesigned to the point that they bore almost no resemblance to the source material.

Are you a fan of the ‘Big Hero 6’ movie?  Are you glad to get more adventures with this colorful team?
