Chris-Pine-Steve-Trevor

We know Chris Pine is playing Steve Trevor, Wonder Woman’s love interest in the upcoming comic book adaptation, directed by Patty Jenkins, with Gal Gadot starring as the title hero.  But unlike Superman’s romantic partner Lois Lane, Steve may be a bit of an enigma to the general public.

Pine is busy stumping for his new movie ‘The Finest Hours’ but can’t escape questions about ‘Wonder Woman’ which doesn’t arrive until next year and is currently filming.  He was recently asked about his character in the film:

Steve-Trevor“Steve Trevor is a rogue-ish, cynical realist who’s seen the awful brutish nature of modern civilization.  He’s a worldly guy, a charming guy and it’s going to be a great, fun film. There are some incredibly deep, interesting and morally relevant themes.”

Rogue-ish, cynical realist?  Sounds an awful lot like Pine’s most famous role, the swaggering updated version of Captain Kirk in the ‘Star Trek’ movies!  We know he does that part well.  We may have to wait and see how he manages to differentiate the two.

Steve Trevor debuted in the same issue as Wonder Woman herself, ‘All-Star Comics’ #8 from December 1941/January 1942.  He was an army intelligence officer who crashed his jet off the coast of the hidden home of the Amazons, Paradise Island.  The Amazon princess, Diana, carted him back to “Man’s World” where she adopted the secret identity of Diana Prince and began working alongside Trevor, while also battling evil in her other guise as Wonder Woman.

Throughout the years, Trevor has served various purposes in the comics.  Sometimes he is a capable and formidable man of action, while at other times, he is a love sick “Damsel in Distress” that has to be rescued by Wonder Woman in every story.  There have even been extended periods of time when he was absent from the comics completely.  Unlike Lois Lane, writers and editors seemed to have no problem killing Steve off, as it happened twice.  He came back.  Uh… twice.

One of the most fun depictions of Steve (and Wonder Woman) was in this short clip from ‘Batman: The Brave and the Bold’ from 2011:

Pine’s ‘The Finest Hours’ arrives this weekend.  Pine returns as Captain Kirk in ‘Star Trek Beyond’ on July 22, 2016.

What would you like to see from Pine as Steve Trevor?

‘Wonder Woman’ starring Gal Gadot, Chris Pine, Robin Wright, Connie Nielsen, Danny Huston, David Thewlis, Ewen Bremner, Saïd Taghmaoui, Elena Anaya, and Lucy Davis will be released on June 23, 2017.
