While most of Zack Snyder’s work tends to get praise there has been a huge outcropping of complaints about some of his choices in ‘Man of Steel’.  Snyder not only opens up about these criticisms but gives us a great tease for what to expect when ‘Batman v Superman: Dawn of Justice‘ is released. It is clear that the new film is a sequel to the first by focusing on the fallout from the hero’s actions and while fans have been very vocal in their complaints, it has always been his goal to go this route.

In the most recent issue of Famous Monsters Of Filmland, Snyder was asked about the destruction of Metropolis:

“I stand by it, because for me, I’ve always said when I was working on Watchmen — and maybe it’s sort of left over from a Watchmen philosophical sort of thing — that there should be consequences to superheroes’ interaction with the earth. And that was kind of the way that we approached Man of Steel. I wanted a big consequence to Superman’s arrival on earth. Certainly, Batman v Superman sort of cashes in all its chips on the ‘why’ of that destruction.”

Even with that in mind, I don’t think it will sway anyone who had the opinion that it wasn’t the route to go for the last son of Krypton.

So how does this play into DC’s upcoming sequel?

“The discovery of the story is that Batman fights Superman. Now move your superhero chess pieces so that can happen. And it can happen in a credible and interesting way. … It’s just incredibly satisfying and fun to dig into these two mythological characters and find a through line that allows them to come into conflict in a way that not only is philosophically satisfying, but also physically real.”

Not only that, but Snyder gives a small nugget of insight on what we can expect from how Bruce Wayne feels about continuing to don the cowl of the Caped Crusader.

“He’s not yet tired of his place in the world. He’s definitely still tooth-and-nailing it.”

So it sounds as if we’ll be having the Dark Knight that everyone has come to know and love and not one who wants to hang up his cape for good.
