In  a strange twist in George Lucas‘s newest saga (that of his divorce with the ‘Star Wars’ franchise and recurring media wars with Disney and Lucasfilm over how ‘The Force Awakens’ turned out), it seems that some fans have decided to weigh in on Lucas’s future with the franchise, though to be clear, it is definitely not the majority of fans that feel this way. In fact, I am sure it is a very small minority. It seems these fans are pushing for Disney/Lucasfilm to drop Colin Trevorrow (‘Jurassic World‘) as director of ‘Episode IX’ and instead get George Lucas to come back and direct the final film of the new trilogy, thus completing not only this trilogy, but also the trilogy of trilogies that started in 1977 when Lucas first directed ‘A New Hope.’

Here’s the words of the petitioners trying to explain why they want Lucas to come back and direct ‘Episode IX’:

We have no problem with Colin Trevorrow , but he’s not the right guy to direct Star Wars Episode IX . George Lucas as director of Episode IX would be the perfect way to end this new trilogy and make an epic farewell between the Father of Star Wars and the whole universe of the galaxy far, far away …. We would like to see him again involved with the franchise. Thank you so much.

Fortunately, it seems Trevorrow and Disney are not ones to be pushed around by a few fans with wild ideas, especially not when Trevorrow just proved himself with ‘Jurassic World’ and has already begun work on ‘Episode IX.’ Therefore, here is Trevorrow’s response to the fan-based movement, in which you can tell he is trying very hard to not burn bridges:

“It’s funny, I saw that, and it was on a day where I was at LucasFilm giving this big speech to everyone about how we want to channel the invention and just the raw creativity and the boldness that George brought to these films and not being afraid that we’re going to embarrass ourselves by doing something that might be crazy.

“When George Lucas made Star Wars, a lot of people thought it was crazy. When you try to pitch what that movie’s about – if you’ve never heard of Star Wars before, you say, ‘Here’s a character. His father’s part robot, but he can also do magic. And there’s a guy who can fly in a spaceship. He’s got a dog for a friend!’ – it sounds insane but it’s the greatest story ever told. I just want to embrace that kind of invention and creativity that he brought to it.”

At the end of the day, there is no way Lucas is coming back, as the man himself has said he’s done with big-budget pictures and ‘Star Wars’ criticism, but the fact that some fans feel this strongly is interesting indeed, perhaps enough time has passed that Lucas has finally been forgiven for his prequel trilogies? Who knows? But feel free to share your thoughts and opinions on the matter down in the comments below!
