In case you thought there might be a chance that Joss Whedon might still be somewhat involved in the MCU, the man himself has confirmed that he is out of that universe, and looking for new challenges to work on. Which makes a lot of sense when you think about it. Whedon has been with the MCU for over 5 years and with the response he got from fans for his latest ‘Avengers’ flick (‘Age of Ultron‘), no one can blame him for stepping away (while ‘Ultron’ may not have been the best of the MCU, it was far from the worst, and not entirely deserving of the harsh criticism fans threw his way afterwards). However, he does not seem bitter toward Marvel, merely explaining it was time to move on:

“I’ve gone off the reservation for a while. It was five years that I was working on either Avengers or S.H.I.E.L.D. That was an enormous gift they gave me; they handed me several hundreds of millions of dollars and said ‘do what you do,’ which is very rare and I was very lucky. At the same time, it’s important for me not just to have my own thing and do something smaller, but also to create a new challenge for myself because I will start to repeat myself.”

When asked how far “off the reservation” he went, Whedon explained why he felt so worn out after Marvel’s Phase 2:

“No, you know, I was their sort of consigliere for a while…but I sort of had my finger in all of the films in the second phase but then I just had to concentrate only on Ultron and sort of know that when it was done, I was just going to stop, so I made a completely clean break.”

Considering the wonderful stories Whedon has already told (‘Buffy the Vampire Slayer,’ ‘Firefly’) I look forward to his next project, and hope to see him back in his prime soon. Make sure to share your own thoughts on ‘Age of Ultron’ and Whedon leaving the MCU in the comments section below!
