Of all the mysteries opened up during ‘Star Wars: The Force Awakens,’ the story of how and why C-3PO has his new arm may not seem the most compelling question to have answered, which is probably why Lucasfilm is already letting us know through books and comics instead of waiting for ‘Episode VIII.’
In the film itself, the only mention made of the new appendage is a humorous moment when C-3PO re-introduces himself to Han Solo, as the droid is worried that the man might not recognize him with his new red arm. (I believe the exact quote it: “You probably don’t recognize me with my red arm.”) According to a new companion book to ‘Star Wars: The Force Awakens,’ the addition of the red arm to 3PO’s body is the result of an untold story of another droid, something which C-3PO does not discuss in the film. Check out the exact quote below:
“C-3PO is uncharacteristically quiet when it comes to discussing his salvaged arm; it is a memento of another droid’s sacrifice.”
Fortunately for those us of who find this interesting, the Marvel/Lucasfilm comic people are already getting ready to release this complete story of C-3PO’s adventure with this mysterious droid, in the Marvel ‘C-3PO’ one -shot comic, which will be written by James Robinson and illustrated by Tony Harris. Based on how quiet C-3PO is about what happened, I believe we can safely assume the story will be somewhat poignant, though how much it will really tie into ‘The Force Awakens’ is anyone’s guess. As some fans have pointed out (and which I will have to look for the next time I see the movie), his “memento” did not last for the entirety of ‘The Force Awakens,’ as he seems to have two golden arms again by the end of the film (again, that is something I’m going to have to confirm for myself next time I see the movie).
