‘Star Wars: The Force Awakens’ SPOILERS AHEAD!

Of all of the mysteries swirling in the cultural ether nowadays about the various characters and plots in J.J. Abrams’ ‘Star Wars: The Force Awakens,’ there is one question that we may already have an answer to, and might have had the answer for quite some time. You see, in the lead up to ‘The Force Awakens,’ Disney/Lucasfilm released a number of comics, short stories and novels, all part of a campaign known as the “Road to ‘The Force Awakens.’ ” The mystery that might have been answered during this period has to do with how Kyle Ren aka Ben Solo managed to get ahold  Darth Vader’s helmet. Luckily, this story was most likely told in a short-story by Delilah S. Dawson titled ‘The Perfect Weapon.’

In the short story, the character known as Bazine Netal (who we met in ‘The Force Awakens’ as portrayed by Anna Brewster, and was the character who ratted out Han, Finn and Rey to the First Order in Maz’s bar) is sent on a secret mission to retrieve a package from a former Imperial Stormtrooper who had once been stationed on Endor. She never opens the package, and we never see the eventual recipient, but based on contextual clues, fans are fairly certain that the package was the charred remains of Vader’s helmet, and the recipient was Kylo Ren. It fits very well with what we know about Kylo Ren, having resources to hire someone to track down his grandfather’s helmet, and also fits neatly into the world established in the film, where Bazine Netal clearly has First Order ties, specifically to the troops commanded by Kylo Ren.
