George Lucas needs to stop talking about ‘Star Wars’, and I understand the irony of this next statement, but we all need to stop paying attention to him when he does. In the latest nonsense the man has spouted about the beloved franchise, Lucas tries to explain one of the most controversial changes he made in his “Special Edition” of the films, wherein Greedo the bounty hunter shoots first when confronting Han Solo in the cantina, negating the original story point of Han shooting first. Lucas spoke on the subject while chatting with the Washington Post, after admitting that neither he nor Abrams wanted him sitting over the man’s shoulder while creating ‘The Force Awakens,’ and how Lucas is reluctant to go see the new film. In regards to the Han Solo/ Greedo situation, he had the following to say:

“Han Solo was going to marry Leia, and you look back and say, ‘Should he be a cold-blooded killer?’ Because I was thinking mythologically — should he be a cowboy, should he be John Wayne? And I said, ‘Yeah, he should be John Wayne.’ And when you’re John Wayne, you don’t shoot people [first] — you let them have the first shot. It’s a mythological reality that we hope our society pays attention to.”

First of all Mr. Lucas, I think you need to go back and watch some John Wayne movies. My father is an avid fan of the man, which means I grew up watching a lot of John Wayne, and shooting first seems exactly the kind of thing some of Wayne’s characters would do. Especially in a situation where it would still be considered self-defense to shoot first, as is the case of Han and Greedo. Seems to me that Lucas is desperate to explain his choices in regards to his tinkering with the franchise, and is struggling to remain relevant now that he has realized the fans and the franchise are more than happy to keep going without him.

Either way, we all know Han shot first, we all know Lucas made huge mistakes in going back to change the original trilogy, and I think most of us are fairly happy that Lucas can no longer dabble in the ‘Star Wars’ universe, as he lost his touch years ago. If you have a different opinion on the matter, feel free to share it below in the comments.
