‘Jessica Jones’ seems to be a resounding success with viewers.  Netflix hasn’t yet reported how often the show has been streamed, but judging by the internet reactions quite a few people have tuned in to the adventures of a former hero played by Krysten Ritter as she matched wits with the villain who tormented her, Zebediah Kilgrave played by a menacing David Tennant.  This spring, the first Marvel/Netflix collaboration, ‘Daredevil’ impressed so well that it almost immediately got a Season Two order.  But don’t expect the same for ‘Jessica Jones’.

At least not right away.  Showrunner Melissa Rosenberg was asked if there was a shot at the show getting a second season and she replied there was a complication, time.

Here is her statement:

“I hope so. There certainly is storytelling wise. The question becomes is there actual time? There are logistics involved, because Defenders has to shoot by a certain time, contractually. Actually, I’m not sure; I’m not at all involved in those conversations, much to my dismay. The first question is whether or not we will even get a second season. The second question is, if so, when? Will it be before The Defenders or after? I’d certainly love it to be before but there are things that play into that — time, availability.”

When Marvel first announced its partnership with Netflix, it was always in the cards that Daredevil, Jessica Jones, Luke Cage and Iron Fist would get their own shows before joining together as The Defenders in a special limited series.  But perhaps ‘Daredevil’ was more popular than anticipated.  The second season is currently filming and will become available to stream in the first half of next year, meaning there will be two doses of ‘Daredevil’ before ‘Luke Cage’ or ‘Iron Fist’ even get inaugural installments.

But according to Rosenberg, ‘Defenders’ has to shoot within a certain time frame.  (Marvel doesn’t OWN these actors, after all.)  So the powers that be probably need to get cracking on ‘Luke Cage’ and ‘Iron Fist’!

As for Rosenberg, she may run ‘Jessica Jones’ but her involvement with ‘Defenders’ is unknown.  She discussed her attachment to the character and how playing in the larger Marvel sandbox affects that:

“I’m a complete control freak when it comes to this character. I will do everything in my power to protect the character in whatever forms. They’ll have to throw me kicking and screaming out of that building. But they own the property. They’ve really been inclusive thus far so I’m not really worried about it.”

What do you hope to see on the Netflix Marvel Universe?  Would you rather get a second helping of ‘Jessica’ or is ‘Defenders’ more important?

‘Jessica Jones’ is available in its entirety on Netflix now.
