‘Fast and Furious’ star Vin Diesel has already lent his voice to the Marvel Cinematic Universe with his role of Groot in James Gunn’s ‘Guardians of the Galaxy‘, so one would think a second role in the same universe might be confusing. Diesel’s latest hint about the role he wants should clear up that confusion. During press for his new action movie ‘The Last Witch Hunter’, he told io9:
“We’ve heard a lot of talk about Marvel wanting to have me play a character that doesn’t have my voice. So my voice is used for Groot and my presence is used for the other character.”
The idea is that Groot sounds like Diesel yet looks nothing like him as a CG creation so a second role in the universe could look like Diesel yet sound nothing like him. Or perhaps, sound like no one at all. Luckily, there is a character who doesn’t speak already expected to appear in the scheduled Marvel movie ‘The Inhumans‘. Black Bolt is the ruler of the Inhumans who has an electron-harnessing ability tied to the voice center of his brain. This means that whenever he speaks he releases a highly destructive shockwave. His voice is kind of like an over-powered version of DC’s Black Canary with the X-Men’s Cyclops’ inability to turn off his power. As Black Bolt, Diesel would remain silent for most of the movie. If he does speak, it’ll sound more like an explosion than Diesel’s voice, allowing “I am Groot,” to be his only vocal contribution.
If you need any other evidence pointing to Diesel’s future role, he posted this gem to to Facebook during the release of ‘Guardians of the Galaxy’,
And again around the beginning of the year:
Of course, this is all coming from Diesel and not Marvel. It could just be that he wants the role and is trying to rally fan support. He has it from me. Vin Diesel’s acting is at it’s finest when looking intimidating, which is essentially all this role calls for.
