Fans of ‘Death Note’ are probably worried on how the live action adaptation will play out and word that Nat Wolff (‘The Fault in Our Stars’,’Paper Towns’) will be set to play Light Yagami may not alleviate that feeling.

Wolff is more known for his work in young adult dramas which isn’t an inspiring pitch for someone who is working to “cleanse the world of evil” by murder. It was first announced that Adam Wingard (‘You’re Next’,’The Guest’) was going to be the live version of Tsugumi Ohba and Takeshi Obata’s classic manga for Warner Brothers though there hasn’t been much in the way of updates until now.

While Wolff tends to be in films that have been quite successful as of late, they aren’t quite in the same style that he has worked with lately. Of course not much short of direct horror work would have someone come into owning “a supernatural notebook that allows him to kill anyone simply by writing the victim’s name.” We’ll see him working to not only destroy evil but run into a police detective who believes that he is responsible for the murders.

No word on how closely to the original source material from the manga or anime that Wingard is set to follow. I suspect at the very least we’ll see name changes to Light Yagami, the spirit Ryuk who helps him, and possible an expanded name to the detective who in the books is simply known as L. There haven’t been many live-action manga conversions to actually be released state side though long rumored ‘Ghost in the Shell‘, ‘Bleach‘ and ‘Akira‘ adaptations persist to claim that they are moving forward.

With the film set to begin production next spring I suspect we’ll be hearing quite a bit more on casting and its direction in the near future.
