While ‘Maze Runner: The Scorch Trials‘ takes place immediately after the first film, we now know that the third installment will be called ‘Maze Runner: The Death Cure’ and will jump forward a year. We learned all of this during the press tour for the upcoming sequel where director Wes Ball explains why we’re going to see the jump and a few teases as to what we can expect in the third movie. With some of the elements from the third book being put into the second film, there is no telling where one film will leave off and the next will begin.
His exact words were:
“This next one will be cool because we’re gonna cut maybe a year later. Yeah, so it’ll be cool. Some things have happened off screen, which is gonna make the movie feel even bigger.”
For those who just can’t get enough of the films, you might be happy to hear that Wes might have something special up his sleeve in the way of “never-before-seen” footage to be included as special features! In fact, he’d want to release the extended editions as one long continuous cut if possible:
“Oh yeah, there’s plenty. Yeah, there’s plenty of that. Who knows? Maybe. We’ll see. Actually, what would be really cool, especially the second one, what we did is we designed it so you could just butt ‘em up together. No credits, no nothing, just start the movie and go, which would be a fun way to watch and I’ve seen the movie kind of that way already. It’s really cool the way it kind of ends and then just picks back up. And that would be fun to kind of somehow string it together so it’s all one, huge six-hour saga.”
Aside from the jump in time, Ball has a very big reason on why ‘Maze Runner: The Death Cure’ will stand apart from the first two films:
“We’re working on the third one right now, working to make it even better and even cooler, and doing the same thing we did on this last one where it’s a different movie. It’s gonna be a different kind of an engine, a different kind of genre almost and a different sort of color palette and terrain. It’s gonna be cool. It’s gonna be very, very cool I think.”
This is the kind of change that could either make or break how fans see the series. I think it sounds interesting but we’ll have to wait and see how it plays out on screen.
