Drew Pearce had just mentioned that a second ‘Ghostbusters’ film was in the works but Ivan Reitman is stressing that there is only Paul Feig‘s at this time. While Pearce claims to have finished a bible of what direction that he wanted the sequel to go and that both the Russo Brothers and Reitman were on board, that might not be the case after all.

It isn’t clear if this is meant to be damage control, if the studios are unsure of the direction of the franchise or if Pearce just jumped the gun on his announcement. What we do know is that Reitman is endorsing just one ‘Ghostbusters’ film:

“There has been a lot of excitement recently about what is happening with the Ghostbusters franchise. As the producer of the new Ghostbusters film, I feel the need to clarify. There is only one new Ghostbusters movie and that is the Paul Feig directed version coming next July, presently filming and going fantastically. The rest is just noise.”

So while a sequel might be on Sony’s mind it doesn’t look as if it has gotten to Reitman as of yet. That being said, he was the one who initially mentioned another film could be in the works and that he had plans for a franchise. Could Sony be pulling some strings here to keep things quiet or does a follow up hinge completely on the box office success of Feig’s work? As Sony hasn’t greenlit one maybe this is such early planning stages that they have multiple writers kicking around ideas and haven’t decided on a route as of yet.

What are your thoughts on Reitman pulling back so abruptly from word of a sequel? Do you think the studio told him to hold off and that’s why its “just noise” at this time? Share your thoughts below!
