Back in October 2014, Marvel Comics announced probably the most unexpected ongoing series in recent history when they unveiled Ryan North and Erica Henderson’s ‘Unbeatable Squirrel Girl’. Since then, it has become a surprise hit with a devoted following not unlike Kelly Sue DeConnick’s Captain Marvel, Kieron Gillen’s Young Avengers, or Matt Fraction’s Hawkeye. However, when the first wave of All-New All-Different Marvel was announced, Doreen Green was nowhere to be seen in terms of a solo series (although she was added to Al Ewing and Gerardo Sandoval’s ‘New Avengers’ alongside some other familiar fan favorites). Did this mean the end for everyone’s favorite superhero with the powers of both a squirrel and a girl? Not a chance.
During Sunday’s Women of Marvel panel at San Diego Comic-Con, the House of Ideas revealed that ‘The Unbeatable Squirrel Girl’ is scheduled to keep eating nuts and kicking butts this October when they debut a new volume of the popular series with its creative team still intact. Judging by the upcoming cover, the premise of the book will remain the same as we see Squirrel Girl balance college with her adventures with Tippy-Toe, Nancy, and the rest of the gang, although it seems like her New Avengers duties will factor into things as well. While we wonder whether Doreen has trading cards featuring her new teammates, check out the cover for ‘The Unbeatable Squirrel Girl’ #1 Vol.2 below courtesy of Comic Book Resources:
Phew, that was a close one, True Believers. There’s no need to worry about living in a Marvel Universe without North and Henderson’s ‘Unbeatable Squirrel Girl’. Now, if only we could get some merch for the Bushy-Tailed Brawler*, we’d be in business. But until then, let us know how excited you are for more quirky, upbeat adventures with Chipmunk Hunk, Koi Boy, and any other animal themed allies and villains this amazing team can think of in the comments.
*Also, we could use more awesome nicknames like this one for Squirrel Girl. If Batman can have so many, then so could Doreen.
