It’s the stuff that childhood (and grown-up fandom) is made of– speculating what would happen if different characters from completely unrelated franchises met.

Lego has read your nerdy little mind and channeled this anything-goes spirit into it’s new mashup video game ‘Lego Dimensions’ in which players can play as characters from original concepts like Ninjago, Chima and The Lego Movie, as well as licensed brands ‘Jurassic World,’ ‘Lord of the Rings,’ ‘DC Comics,’ ‘Back To The Future,’ ‘Portal 2,’ ‘The Simpsons,’ ‘Scooby Doo,’ ‘The Wizard of Oz’ and… yes, ‘Doctor Who!’

The Peter Capaldi/12th Doctor minifigure comes in an expansion pack, along with K9 and a TARDIS, which can be slotted into the vehicle base for the game.

‘Lego Dimensions’ joins the “toy to life” brigade, similar to ‘Skylanders’ (the first such hybrid) and ‘Disney Infinity’ which also includes characters from ‘Marvel Comics’ and soon ‘Star Wars.’ Like those other games, ‘Lego Dimensions’ is played using physical toys, with electronic chips  that insert the character and vehicle into the game.  The starter pack comes with minifigures of Wyldstyle, Batman and Gandalf plus the Batmobile.  (Warning, it’s a Lego product so you actually have to construct the interactive platform out of bricks!)

There are three types of expansions (each sold separately of course): Level Packs, Team Packs and Fun Packs.  ‘Doctor Who’ is a Level Pack, meaning that this set actually unlocks a unique level within the game.  Other Level Packs include ‘Back To The Future,’ ‘Portal 2,’ and ‘The Simpsons.’  Team Packs don’t unlock additional levels, but do come with a two characters,  a vehicle and a gadget/accessory.  Fun Packs are the most basic with just one new character and a gadget or vehicle.  (It appears The Doctor also includes a Sonic Screwdriver, but it isn’t officially listed.)

Peter Capaldi himself provides his character’s voice.  Jenna Coleman and Michelle Gomez will provide the voices of Clara and Missy, respectively, but at this point, they don’t appear to be playable characters as there is only one set solicited.

Watch below, as Capaldi’s Doctor teams up with Wyldstyle, Gandalf and Batman and offers a frenetic tease as to the nature of this game.  Look out for cameos!:

Perhaps the coolest news?  Players aren’t limited to playing just as the 12th Doctor!  They have their option of playing as ANY of the 12 Doctors!  So pick your favorite and set your TARDIS to visit Oz, Springfield, Hill Valley, Middle Earth or Jurassic World… or whatever other realms are available within the game.

If the game is successful, look for additional packs based on other properties.  Harry Potter is an obvious choice, seeing as how the brand’s licensing is handled by Warner Brothers, who owns many of the brands included here and has already been the subject of Lego games.

‘LEGO Dimensions’ will be released on September 27, 2015 for Playstation 3, Playstation 4, XBox 360, XBox One and Wii U.  The ‘Doctor Who’ expansion pack does not yet have an in-store date.

Are you excited to explore this awesome digital brick world?  What other properties would you like to see join the fun and games?
