Though the state of the Marvel Universe after ‘Secret Wars’ was largely unclear until recently, one thing that we knew for sure was that acclaimed comic book veteran Mark Waid would probably helm the flagship Avengers title when all was said and done. We saw a preview of his take on Earth’s Mightiest Heroes during this year’s Free Comic Book Day, but now we have even more details about ‘All-New All-Different Avengers’.
The Wall Street Journal broke the news earlier this week that the ‘Daredevil’ and ‘S.H.I.E.L.D.’ writer would join forces with artists Adam Kubert and Mahmud Asrar (who will alternate issues in order to produce more than twelve a year) to be the creative forces behind the upcoming Avengers title that will feature one of the most diverse and real-world reflective team rosters that the House of Ideas has ever seen. This team will consist of leader Tony Stark (and his all-new all-different Iron Man armor), Captain America (Sam Wilson), Thor (Jane Foster), Spider-Man (Miles Morales), Nova (Sam Alexander), Ms. Marvel (Kamala Kahn), and the Vision. With this completely new team in place, Waid gets to do something with the Avengers that hasn’t been done in quite a while:
“We get to do something that hasn’t been done since the beginning of the series back in 1963, which is we get to tell an origin story for the Avengers as the team rebuilds from the ground up.”
This newly rebuilt team will come face to face with Warbringer, a frequent foe of Nova, as their first big bad. However, it seems like Stark’s team will have to deal with the challenges of every day life as well. Executive Editor Tom Brevoort reveals that Iron Man and S.H.I.E.L.D. won’t be able to provide unlimited resources to the Avengers anymore due to events that will be uncovered in Brian Michael Bendis’ ‘Invincible Iron Man’. Additionally, Brevoort also shares that a number of team members still have to continue their educations:
“They’re poor, and they have to manage their assets. Another new wrinkle: Half the team goes to school. They’ve got hours of operation, and if they get stuck in Zimbabwe, somebody’s going to have to write the absentee slips.”
Based on these new details, this team of Avengers certainly lives up to it’s ‘All-New All-Different’ moniker. But what do you think? Are you excited for this new generation of Earth’s Mightiest Heroes? What do you think of the new line-up? Let us know in the comments below.
