While those of us who are waiting for TNT’s ‘Teen Titans‘ aren’t going to be happy that the series has again been delayed but the rest of the updates are all good news! TNT network president Kevin Reilly has opened up a little on what we can expect from the series. The main reason for the delay has been series writer Akiva Goldsman’s (‘Fringe’,’Rings’) other recent commitments but that seems to be finally moving forward. While casting has not yet been done and we aren’t fully sure on the lineup it previously sounded as if the official team’s lineup would consist of Dick Grayson, Barbara Gordon, Hawk, Dove, Raven, and Starfire. Pretty much the same lineup from what we had previously thought.
It also is starting to look like production on the pilot could begin this summer. The series will be taking strong queues from ‘New Titans’ and if that is the case, we should be flooded with casting details in the near future.
What Reilly specifically had to say about the series though is what should get us all excited:
“I sat down with Akiva and said — and he ultimately agreed — that the [TV] landscape right now is well-serviced on the superhero front. So what space is this going to inhabit? And really what he wants to do is be very true [to the source material]. [It] was a groundbreaking property when it first started.
There were consequences to things that happened; it wasn’t somebody died and they moved on. There was the first superhero to be an addict [in Roy Harper’s Speedy]. It’s a coming-of-age story for Robin, who feels like Batman has betrayed him. I think it’s going to end up being a very, very interesting offering. I think it’s going to be excellent.”
It sounds like we’ll be seeing these heroes moving from their teen years into being young adults which seems like a great target audience for a super hero themed series right now. Specifically one where many fans of the older ‘Teen Titans’ cartoon that was so popular for a while are currently in that age group.
