The Hulk almost showed his true colors in ‘Avengers: Age of Ultron,’ though that might be a bit misleading, as the history of the grey Hulk is a bit more complicated than that. Initially, the creators of the Hulk wanted the character to be grey, but due to comic coloring issues at the time, they decided green would be easier to deal with. Later, the Grey Hulk did appear in comic-book form, but he was actually the “weakest” of the Hulk forms, but also the most intelligent, being the most in control and intelligent form of the Hulk, being basically Banner in the Hulk’s body.
So how would they have brought in the grey Hulk to ‘Avengers: Age of Ultron?” Simple, when the Scarlett Witch makes the Hulk go on a rampage, he would have been so angry and crazy that he would have turned grey. The filmmakers were aware (I think) that the Grey Hulk is not his angriest form, but the color change was basically a subtle nod to the comics and the Hulk’s origins, which I think most fans would have appreciated.
According to a source who interviewed with ‘Wired‘ :
“Initially, Hulk was actually planned to turn grey when he’s angry Hulk in the Hulkbuster sequence but hey, everybody wanted the green guy. So, in the end, ILM just changed his eyes to make them look more sullen when he’s under the control of Scarlet Witch.”
Apparently the Grey Hulk plan was a legitimate move for the movie for some time, as they had even started licensing the new colored character, as we reported 3 months ago when they released a Grey Hulk (known as the Savage Hulk) Funko POP Vinyl figure.
What are your thoughts on the potential inclusion of the Grey Hulk? Would it have made sense? Or just been a distracting fan-boy nod that would have confused the average viewer? Shared your opinIon in the comments below!
