While Joss Whedon has had smash hits with ‘Buffy the Vampire Slayer,’ ‘The Avengers’ and ‘Avengers: Age of Ultron,’ not all of his ideas have been winners. In fact, his thoughts on what to do with ‘Daredevil‘ clearly weren’t in line with Marvel’s vision and in fact, if followed through it probably wouldn’t have ended up as good as the critically acclaimed Netflix series. Fans have come to love Charlie Cox as Matt Murdock on the small screen and the ratings were so high that they are already pushing forward with a second season!

So what was Whedon’s plan?

In an interview with IGN, he revealed he wanted Marvel Studios to make a ‘Daredevil’ movie. Even with the bad taste of Ben Affleck‘s version still lingering, can you imagine a stand alone adventure being able to encompass even half of what the Netflix show gave us?

Here is why Whedon himself thought a movie was the way to go and why he did finally see merit in the Netflix idea:

“He’s basically Marvel’s Batman, thanks to Frank Miller – basically. So for me, I didn’t think they’d be able to sustain that sort of mood on TV. But TV has changed so much. It’s come up so much that I think it might just be the right place.”

I’m not sure I would use Batman as a direct comparison, but I do get where he is coming from with it. That being said, I’m glad that he didn’t have the ability to put Murdock on the big screen as he is a character that really needs some time to be properly fleshed out. I think we’re truly getting a good feel for The Man Without Fear as a series.

I should point out that Whedon still hasn’t had a chance to watch the show. However, it isn’t for a lack of love for the idea but due to starting the press tour for ‘Avengers: Age of Ultron’ right as the series launched.
