Netflix and Marvel’s upcoming ‘Luke Cage‘ has made a big step forward today with the announcement that Cheo Hodari Coker (‘Almost Human  ,”Southland’) will be serving as the showrunner and executive producer of the series. Not only that, but he’ll also be taking on writing duties for the first two episodes of the show! ‘Luke Cage’ will be the third Marvel series that appears on Netflix following the upcoming releases of ‘Daredevil’ and ‘A.K.A. Jessica Jones.’ Rounding out the set will be an ‘Iron Fist‘ series before all four heroes join together to form ‘The Defenders.’

At this time not much is known about the ‘Luke Cage’ series release date aside from that it will be premiering in 2016. It is unclear how many crossovers will occur prior to ‘The Defenders’ though we do know that Luke Cage will be showing up on ‘A.K.A. Jessica Jones‘ before his own series airs. One thing I love which I’m sure will help with the series is that Mike Colter who is playing Luke Cage is a big fan of the comics and has said:

“I’m excited about playing the character because I’ve read the comic books. They’re very detailed, gritty; the world they’ve written in the comic books is very clear… What I’m most excited about is touching on what makes him tick. It feels good to get a character that has such a story, background, and history. And when I look at the scripts, I’m really pleased with it because it’s a slow-burn; there’s nothing happening really fast that gets ahead of itself.”

With Coker having done both films and television series he’ll have a lot to bring to the table when it comes to ‘Luke Cage.’ I think he has the right mix of genre and raw material to really be able to work some magic with the world that Cage lives in.

What are your thoughts on Coker being in charge of developing the series? Are you excited to see ‘Luke Cage’ and the rest of ‘The Defenders’ show up on the small screen? Share your thoughts below!
