Gearbox Software CEO Randy Pitchford recently acknowledged that the first ‘Borderlands’ could potentially see a remastered release on the Xbox One and PS4.
Since the recent release of ‘Borderlands: The Handsome Collection,’ which collects remastered versions of ‘Borderlands 2’ and ‘Borderlands: The Pre-Sequel,’ it has most likely become a bit of burning question in the minds of series fans if the first ‘Borderlands’ game would also be receiving similar treatment sometime in the future.
According to Pitchford during a recent interview on the Major Nelson podcast, a remastered version of ‘Borderlands’ ultimately depends on how well ‘Borderlands: The Handsome Collection’ does.
“The fact that The Handsome Collection has Borderlands: The Pre-Sequel and Borderlands 2 means there’s still that original game that isn’t on next-gen yet,” Pitchford stated. “If this is successful, I’m sure the folks at 2K, the people that care about publishing and figure out how to get content in customers’ hands if customers want it, will be noticing that. And I’d love to have those conversations about how to bring Borderlands 1 to next-gen.”
Unfortunately, Pitchford did point out one problem that exists in the process of potentially creating a remastered version of ‘Borderlands.’ Unlike the last two ‘Borderlands’ games, which both run on the same engine, the original ‘Borderlands’ runs on a completely different one. This means that there might need to be a bit more work done in order to translate the game on to next generation consoles.
Regardless, Pitchford expressed enthusiasm towards the potential possibility of a remastered version of the first ‘Borderlands.’
“If ‘Borderlands: The Handsome Collection’ is successful enough, there might be a way to justify that,” said Pitchford. “And I really hope that’s the case. I’d love to have my entire Borderlands collection on next-gen.”
‘Borderlands: The Handsome Collection’ is available now for Xbox One and PS4.
