Great news ‘Firefly’ fans, Morena Baccarin (‘Homeland’,’Gotham’) is returning to the big screen as the female lead in ‘Deadpool‘!

While originally there were 6 names in the running, it would seem that Baccarin has risen to the top and as a fan of her work I couldn’t be happier! She will be joining Ryan Reynolds as well as T.J. Miller and Gina Carano which is set to be released next year.

Baccarin will play Deadpool’s love interest. Part of what drives her character will revolve around dealing with having fallen in love with someone who is as deformed as Wade is. The question is will she have been in love with Deadpool from before becoming the scarred man he is today or fall in love with the insanity that we all know and love?

Deadpool has had quite a few love interests over the years so it is hard to say if the movie will be following any specific ones from the comics or be an entirely new character. A rumored leaked casting piece for the film though did describe the potential love interest as:

Attractive and worldly. Smart, tough, beautiful but a little bit broken. Nothing has ever been easy for her and she’s developed a thick skin and cynical outlook. But she’s not a victim—she may not have a great life but she’s holding it together and does what she needs to get by. She’s got a great sense of humor but it leans heavily towards irony and sarcasm.

Someone who enjoys irony and sarcasm? Sounds like she’ll fall for the Deadpool we know. There are two key mutants who could fall into this description. One is Domino, who is a mercenary, and the other is Copycat, a shapeshifter that actually was Deadpool’s girlfriend in the comics. Well, she was before Wade went through the Weapon X program and became Deadpool.

Of course, Deadpool has also been married three times. Once to Satana, another time to Orksa (who is an alien that he came across) and finally to Shiklah, Queen of the Undead who he is currently still with. Of course with the slew of relationships he’s been in, it could be any number of established characters.

Baccarin has been a genre heavyweight over the years having hit the scene in ‘Firefly’ and Serenity’. She followed that up with voice work in many DC properties such as ‘Justice League’. Not only that, but having roles on ‘Stargate SG-1’, ‘V’, ‘The Flash’, and ‘Gotham’ have really kept her in our view. With ‘Deadpool,’ even more of the world is going to be able to enjoy her amazing performance!
