Daybreak Game Company, formerly known as Sony Online Entertainment, have been targeted by the anonymous infamous hacking group known as Lizard Squad.

The group, who launched DDoS attacks on both PlayStation Network and Xbox Live during Christmas, attacked the developer’s servers causing its various online multiplayer games to suffer from connection issues. Titles affected included ‘H1Z1’ and ‘Planetside 2.’

To further add insult on top of their attack, Lizard Squad also taunted the Daybreak Game Company President John Smedley on Twitter. Here is a copy of the tweet exchange below:

This isn’t the first time that Lizard Squad has attacked Daybreak Game Company. The studio had actually had a previous run-in with the group when bomb threats were sent as a political attack to an American Airlines plane that Smedley had been on back in August 2014.

Daybreak Game Company was formerly known as Sony Online Entertainment. However,  the studio’s change of name came as a result of recently going independent when they were sold by Sony to Columbus Nova. For those unfamiliar with their work, they are a studio most famously known for their work on the classic MMORPG ‘Everquest’ franchise. More recently, they have created other online titles such as ‘DC Universe Online’, and as previously mentioned, ‘Planetside 2’ and ‘H1Z1’.

As of writing, the reasoning behind the DDoS attacks against Daybreak Game Company is still unclear. The Lizard Squad has had a history of attacking Sony. But what with Daybreak Game Company’s recent separation from Sony, it is difficult to understand why the group would specifically target them since all affiliations with Sony seem to be officially cut.

As of writing, the Lizard Squad has pinned a tweet on their official page stating “brb. More to come, it’s about time to re-ignite lizardsquad.”
