One of the most promising video game adaptations that we’ve ever heard about is the epic of ‘Warcraft‘ that Duncan Jones (‘Moon’,’Source Code’) has been working on and until now,it has been one of the most secretive adaptations as well. While we still don’t know exactly which storylines from the video games this will tie together to give us a cinematic masterpiece, Jones has started to give out some major clues on what we can expect to see in the film as well as which time period of Azeroth that will end up being represented on the big screen.

While shooting on the film has already wrapped, they still have a long journey ahead of them with the amount of CGI that needs to be done in post production. What will it be about though? Jones has finally opened up and the very first piece of information he gives us puts the story at a starting point that I’d like to see it at!

“From the moment I first talked to Blizzard, the plan was to start our film with the first time Orcs met Humans. First contact! I think that for a world with so much newness to explain, this was a wise choice, especially when so many people in our audience may not know anything about Warcraft… it was important that some of our characters would be seeing the world fresh as well, and that the audience could see the situation through their eyes… A Warcraft film should not be about a good race of humans battling an evil race of Orcs! Warcraft should be about heroes on both sides trying to avoid a conflict, when villains leave them no choice.”

This is how it should be done. Yes, both sides will be at odds with one another but neither one is evil in their own view and we’re going to see this conflict kick off right at the start as these two races clash as they meet each other for the very first time.

What are the long term plans for the series? Well Jones has a very ambitious idea in mind and clearly owes his vision to the most successful filmmaker of fantasy movies in the modern era.

“Peter Jackson did a magnificent job of ‘setting the table’ for Tolkein’s universe with his first Lord of the Rings film. I know that my job in this first film is to establish certain characters, places and culture while telling a story that a broad audience can be excited by! Hopefully, if I have done my job right, people will want to know and see more! There is certainly plenty more to tell! …I would love to be part of that process of expanding on the lore that makes up Warcraft, but it will all depend on what you, the audience, think of our first film!”

With a story that could potentially be epic in scale and not having too many larger fantasy success stories outside of Peter Jackson’s work and ‘Game of Thrones’ there are clearly parallels that could be made here. I hope Jones is able to put something together here that blows us all away as I’d love for this to spawn a successful franchise.
