Last week we found out that Roberto Orci was dismissed from ‘Star Trek 3’ and now the writer has had some time to respond to those rumors and clear the air of what really happened.
According to sources, Orci was let go over a disagreement with the script that he co-wrote with J.D. Payne and Patrick McKay. Appparently, that script involved time travel and a giant retcon of the first two films though that rumor now seems to be no longer the case.
So does this means that he will no longer be directing the film or not? Well, the rumor of him losing the captain’s, erm, director’s chair does seem to be true but not for the reasons listed or for any bad blood between the writer and studio.
On the Trek Movie comment board, Orci does comfirm that is he is no longer the director but that he “will be very involved” and that he is still excited to make ‘Star Trek 3’! He also was positive that the studio will “find the right director!”
However the big rumor that he shoots down completely is the script being the reason he is no longer directing or at least the rumored time travel plot:
Well, this means that most likely the rumor of a returning older Kirk was just a rumor after all. Unless of course he is following in J.J. Abrams steps and lying about it as they lied about Khan not being in the film.
Entertainingly enough one commentator put down that “You seem to have forgotten Kirk’s advice to Picard: “Don’t let them do ANYTHING to take you out of that chairs [sic]. Because while you’re there, you can make a difference.” where Orci gave a very eyebrow raising response with “Have not forgotten. On the contrary, factored into decision. Their are bigger chairs to consider.”
I wonder which chair that could mean?
What are your thoughts on Orci’s comments on the film? Do you think he’ll be living long and prospering in another role for ‘Star Trek 3’ or if he just playing damage control?
