We haven’t heard much on the ‘Stargate‘ reboot as of late and while ‘Independence Day 2‘ has been greenlit, we also haven’t heard much on ‘Independence Day 3.’ Well, Dean Devlin has opened up on both of these films in a recent interview.

Let’s start with aliens on Earth. Wait, that could describe either series. Let’s start with the one that is a sequel and not a reboot. While everything on the next installment into the ‘Independence Day’ franchise sounded as if a trilogy was being planned with the next two films being shot back to back., that is no longer the case. While a trilogy may be possible it now seems as if a third film is on hold so they can focus entirely on ‘Independence Day 2’

“We decided just to do one first to make sure that people like where we’re going. If that works well, there’s an ability to do some world building which would be really fun and interesting to do. I think Roland and everybody felt, let’s just make sure 20 years later that people still are interested. I think in our case, we started to feel that maybe we were being a little bit arrogant by assuming that we could do two movies. We said you know what, let’s scale it down. Let’s first make sure that it works for everyone.”

I’m curious if that “we” that was mentioned above pertained to Emmerich and Devlin or the studios involved with financing, but that is probably a good idea to make sure magic can strike at least twice with 20 years in between than hedge your bets that a third film will be a lock.

One fun fact that he brought up which was not previously confirmed is that Emmerich would be back to direct the film which we had all probably assumed at this point was going to be the case.

“Roland is back to direct. He developed a new script with a couple young writers and the new script is fantastic. We’re very excited about shooting.”

A lot of talks about why Will Smith wasn’t returning have been rumored to be money related but Devlin doesn’t confirm that:

“I’m not sure of the reasons why Will ultimately decided not to do it. You’d have to ask him. I think he was just at a place where he did seriously consider it. We had a lot of meetings with him, but at the end of the day he decided that doing this wasn’t right for him.”

Well that’s a bit of an update on where they stand with ‘Independence Day 2’ and a third that probably relies on box office sales. How about the reboot of ‘Stargate’ though which will completely restart the franchise from scratch? While most fans of the television series are livid about a reboot, those who are hopeful to see more Egyptian themed aliens probably shouldn’t hold their breath:

“Unfortunately, we have to wait until we finish Independence Day for that. Roland wants to direct that one [Stargate] too. Hopefully we go into that right afterwards.”
