The science fiction sequel that will almost be 20 years in the making, ‘Independence Day 2‘, was just green lit by Fox. The film has been proposed for a June 24th, 2016 release date which will allow it to mark the 20 year anniversary of the original film. With the film now a go, they should still be on track to make this date though it was not confirmed with the announcement. Although, the film has been officially announced, we don’t have many new details to share as it looks like they’ve been ready to move forward for months with all of the details we’ve garnered so far.
While rumor originally had the deal as a two film project that would be shot back to back, it looks as if the studio is only willing to gamble on one. Still, if things haven’t changed since the last update we’ll have Roland Emmerich back in the director’s chair. While Will Smith won’t be making a comeback we should still have Jeff Goldblum returning to his role. As multiple scripts were penned, if Smith had a last minute change of heart I don’t believe there would be any issue to have his character added back in, I just wouldn’t get my hopes up on that happening.
We don’t know much about the film aside from just like the release date of the original, 20 years have passed since the events of the first “Independence Day’ unfolded. We’ll clearly be seeing a new America that has recovered from the decimation of the alien invasion, but how will we have used the alien technology to improve our own when the aliens come knocking on our door once again and what monstrosities will they have for us this time? ‘Independence Day 2’ will be an entirely new adventure to enjoy!
