With reports abounding that Will Smith is out of the price range for the producers of ‘Independence Day 2,’ its comforting to hear that they have not forgotten the other piece of the alien busting puzzle from the original. And while rumors do abound that there are two scripts for the movie, one to use if they get Smith, and the other for the more likely scenario of not having him in the movie, it seems clear they are moving ahead without the renown actor, and I personally think the movie will be just fine without him.

Jeff Goldblum has been in touch with Roland Emmerich and discussions have taken place about the actor’s return to the franchise. In Goldblum’s own words from a recent interview:

“I had a meeting and have been talking over the last several months or year with Roland Emmerich and Dean Devlin, the producer…[They] say they have a part for me in what they hope will be a plan to make another one pretty soon.”

As many around the internet have joked since the news broke, Goldblum’s character David Levinson managed to hack into and insert a virus to the aliens’ computers using nothing but a 90s Powerbook and dial-up, imagine what he could do today with a modern laptop and WiFi!

Still, Goldblum is quick to point out that nothing is certain just yet, and he has yet to see a script or be officially invited back into the fold. But it looks promising, at least more promising than any hope of seeing Goldblum returning to his other 90s franchise, as ‘Jurassic World’ seems to be moving full-speed ahead without him. Regardless, let’s hope that Emmerich manages to get the ball rolling on ‘Independence Day 2’ soon, and that the movie is a return to form for both Emmerich and Goldblum alike.
