We just had the fun opportunity to report that Nathan Fillion (‘Serenity’,’Castle’) is going to have a cameo in James Gunn’s ‘Guardians of the Galaxy‘ and now we might even know who he will be playing!

With Gunn instantly shooting down that the actor would play Richard Rider as Nova, I proposed that he could perchance play the role of a certain man who goes unnamed in a brown coat. Clearly that is wishful thinking (even though ‘Firefly‘ IS a Joss Whedon creation so he might be able to work something out). So if he’s not playing the Nova made famous by Marvel or Mal, that leaves things open as the Cosmic universe in Marvel is pretty large. While being dressed as Han Solo in a bar would be awesome, it seems like they went an even more creative route that I hadn’t suggested (and no I’m not saying he should be a Skrull pretending to be one of Fillion’s characters — though that would also work pretty well!)

So who could Fillion end up playing? Clearly there are some potential spoilers ahead, so for those of you who want to go into this as a surprise, you may want to turn back now. If this rumor is true, the first clue was actually in the original tweet as seen below as the phrasing could suggest something most of us didn’t initially pick up on:

You’ll notice that the tweet states that Fillion has a “very small fun cameo”. Very small and fun you say? According to sources, he might not actually be playing a character in the cameo but voicing one.

Early shots from the film have shown us that the Guardians will at one point stop at Knowhere (a Celestial’s head that is now used as a space station at the fringes of space.) Who runs security at Knowhere? A pyshic Russian cosmonaut dog named Cosmo! I’ll give you one guess from that who Fillion is rumored to be voicing. Cosmo not only runs the station’s security but at one point in time becomes a member of the ‘Guardians of the Galaxy’ as well.

Talk about coming at us out of left field! With how strange this may seem, it does fit for something Gunn would propose and Fillion would agree to do.  If not Fillion, then I really do hope that Cosmo (at the very least) makes an appearance.

Now keep in mind this is still just a rumor but the sources are claiming it to be true and they’ve been right before. Are you looking forward to Nathan Fillion voicing a space dog? Do you think we’re being messed with or does this seem accurate to you? Would you rather see him as Richard Rider and break into a whole new set of cosmic movies? Share your thoughts below true believers!

‘Guardians of the Galaxy’ starring Chris Pratt, Dave Bautista, Zoe Saldana, Vin Diesel, Bradley Cooper, Lee Pace, Karen Gillan, Benicio Del Toro, and Michael Rooker blasts off on August 1st, 2014.
