It seems like some early casting wishlists have come out from Marvel for ‘Doctor Strange‘. It is no secret that Marvel Studios president Kevin Feige has wanted a movie with his favorite character for some time now. As we just found out that Scott Derrickson (‘The Exorcism of Emily Rose’,”Sinister‘) was selected to direct the film, it is no surprise that we’re suddenly taking a look for the person who will be playing the potential hub of the third phase of Marvel’s movies.
Previously Johnny Depp and Jon Hamm were rumored to be in the running for the role. Clearly that isn’t the case as it now looks as if they want the role to go to either Tom Hardy (‘Inception‘,’The Dark Knight Rises‘) or Benedict Cumberbatch (‘Star Trek Into Darkness‘,’The Hobbit: The Desolation of Smaug‘). Both stars have had a lot of experience with genre films as well as darker roles. With Derrickson’s horror roots behind him, I think that either one could be a great casting choice.
The character of Doctor Strange was briefly mentioned in ‘Captain America: The Winter Soldier‘ so it wouldn’t surprise me if his casting happened sooner than later to possibly be in the end credits of ‘The Avengers: Age of Ultron‘. It is unclear if we’re going to see his full origin play out on screen, but unless it takes the historic route it is hard to see why else Hydra would be eyeing him as a target.
When I initially heard about the film I thought that the studio was taking a huge leap thinking that they could pull off magic on screen. Of course, I felt the exact same way about the ‘Guardians of the Galaxy‘ but after they released the trailer for the film, it went to the top of my list of movies to see. With their hits far outweighing their misses (I’m looking firmly at you ‘Iron Man 2’), I will give any movie they release the full benefit of the doubt at this point.
