When the first wave of casting announcements of  ‘Star Wars: Episode VII’ were released at the end of April, many noticed that the group was lacking in ladies. Besides the returning Carrie Fisher and newcomer Daisy Ridley, the cast of J.J. Abrams’ upcoming film comprised entirely of men. However, we were assured that more female leads were on their way, and now the galaxy far, far away has delivered.

Right on the tail of the set pictures released earlier today, more ‘Star Wars’ news has emerged announcing that the production has added Lupita Nyong’o and Gwendoline Christie to the cast. StarWars.com shared no details about who the actresses will play in the press release, but both women have certainly been making waves recently with their respective bodies of work. Nyong’o, who was rumored to be joining the ‘Star Wars’ cast a while back, has garnered a good bit of acclaim after her award-winning performance in ’12 Years A Slave’ and has been winning over fans left and right with her lovable interviews. As for Christie, she embodies the imposing and intimidating Brienne of Tarth on HBO’s ‘Game of Thrones’, but she can also be seen in ‘The Hunger Games: Mockingjay – Part 2’ as Commander Lyme.

As Kennedy said in the official announcement, both Nyong’o and Christie are extraordinary talents and they’ll be excellent additions to the new ‘Star Wars’ trilogy, but what do you think about this casting announcement? Are you excited to see who these two will play? Does anyone else think that Brienne of Tarth would make an awesome bounty hunter? Sound off in the comment section.
