While we still have no idea if Ridley Scott (‘Blade Runner‘, ‘Alien’) will be directing ‘Prometheus 2,’ it looks like he hasn’t abandoned his love of space as he is in talks to direct ‘The Martian’. Last month the film had just picked up Matt Damon (‘Elysium‘,’Contagion‘) to star in it just as Drew Goddard (‘The Cabin in the WOods‘,’The Sinister Six‘) had dropped out of the production.
‘The Martian’ will be Scott’s 21st film in the director’s chair and the movie is based off of the self published novel by Andy Weir. It is about an astronaut who ends up stranded on Mars who is trying to find a way home. Sounds like ‘Gravity’ but on a planet much further out than our orbit. It is unclear when the filming will begin, but there is currently a March 4th, 2016 release date for an ‘Untitled Ridley Scott Project’ with Fox which may or may not be ‘Prometheus 2’ or another movie. That puts ‘The Martian’ either further out or it will be being filmed in the very near future.
Here is the book’s full synopsis:
Six days ago, astronaut Mark Watney became one of the first people to walk on Mars.
Now, he’s sure he’ll be the first person to die there.
After a dust storm nearly kills him and forces his crew to evacuate while thinking him dead, Mark finds himself stranded and completely alone with no way to even signal Earth that he’s alive—and even if he could get word out, his supplies would be gone long before a rescue could arrive.
Chances are, though, he won’t have time to starve to death. The damaged machinery, unforgiving environment, or plain-old “human error” are much more likely to kill him first.
But Mark isn’t ready to give up yet. Drawing on his ingenuity, his engineering skills—and a relentless, dogged refusal to quit—he steadfastly confronts one seemingly insurmountable obstacle after the next. Will his resourcefulness be enough to overcome the impossible odds against him?
Having not read the novel, I am curious if ‘The Martian’ will just end up being just about Damon’s character being stuck on Mars, mentally creating a “Martian” for company, or if an actual alien will end up being involved.
