We’ve known for quite some time that ‘Avatar’ would be getting three sequels that would continue to explore Pandora, the mystical home world of the Na’vi. Last month, James Cameron offered an update via a Reddit AMA saying that all three scripts would be ready in about six weeks. As that time draws closer, we recently received some more updates from a returning cast member that many thought might be left out of future installments of the franchise based on what happened in the first film.
Previously, we learned that Sam Worthington, Zoe Saldana, and Stephen Lang would be returning to reprise their roles from the highest-grossing film of all time. Now, Sigourney Weaver has shared that she too will be returning for the sequels, despite her character dying in the first movie. In an interview with Vulture, the veteran actress discussed the challenges of all three sequels shooting at once and teased what role she’ll play in the films:
“It will be challenging for me. I can’t talk about it, but my part is a little different in each one. I’ll transform somewhat. We’ll have to talk again when I survive this.”
If you recall, Weaver’s character Grace Augustine was shot during an attack led by Colonel Quatrich against the Na’vi. In an attempt to save her, the natives tried to upload her soul to her Avatar as she was dying. The process appeared to have failed, but it’s possible that the sequels could reveal the contrary. It’s also possible that Augustine could appear in flashbacks or as some kind of spectral form to offer exposition for the audience or a lesson to Jake Sully and Neytiri. At this point, the possibilities are endless, but at least we know for sure that Weaver will be returning.
What do you think about Sigourney Weaver’s comments about the return of Grace Augustine in the ‘Avatar’ sequels? How do you think that the character will appear in these movies? Share your thoughts and theories in the comments below.
‘Avatar 2’ is scheduled to hit theaters in December 2016.
