Fans were pleasantly surprised to discover that Quicksilver and the Scarlet Witch were special exceptions when it came to the Marvel Cinematic Universe. Being the mutant children of Magneto, that allowed them to be part of the X-Men’s universe but shortly after their debut, the pair were granted membership in the Avengers where they spent the majority of their heroic careers. As a result, Aaron Taylor-Johnson and Elizabeth Olsen will embody the twin mutants in ‘Avengers: Age of Ultron’ (and both made their debut in ‘Captain America: The Winter Soldier’ during the mid-credit sequence) and Evan Peters will portray Quicksilver in ‘X-Men: Days of Future Past’. There has been no mention made of his sister Wanda appearing at all in Fox’s newest X-Flick, but recently a photo emerged showing him with a young, female sibling.
Some speculated that somehow this was a younger version of Wanda (they’re twins in the comics), but that isn’t the case. Director Bryan Singer expressly states, “Is that the Scarlet Witch? No, that’s his little sister. I even had a line which I cut, where Quicksilver’s mother says to the little girl, ‘Go up and bug your sister,’ and the little girl says, ‘She bugs me!’ You never see the older sister, but it was to imply that there is an older sister for comic book fans. I ended up cutting it.”
Peters’ Quicksilver will be recruited by Wolverine to help form the X-Men in order to prevent the dark apocalyptic future that will appear at the beginning of the new film. However, Singer stresses that Quicksilver will just be part of the mix. “Even though our Quicksilver is not a main character like in ‘The Avengers’, it’s a character there’s a lot of thought and concern about and it’s a character I’d like to explore further in the sequel.”
So is this little sister a throwaway creation? Or… is she one of Magneto’s other children? Yes, it was later revealed that Lorna Dane a.k.a. Polaris was secretly a younger daughter of Magneto’s, but prior to that, it was revealed that she had a long-lost sister Zaladane (Zala Dane). However, she was killed off without this being verified. Lorna has had a long-standing romance with Havok (Alex Summers) who is played by Lucas Till in the movie franchise. Granted, she’s a bit young, but he’s not a very old actor/character, so in ten years or so, their pairing might not seem too crazy.
Or it’s possible she won’t ever appear again. It probably has more to do with the role that Quicksilver will ultimately play in the franchise. And will we get to see this mysterious older sister, presumably Wanda, that was hiding upstairs?
What do you think? Would you like to see Scarlet Witch, Polaris or even Zaladane in the X-Men movie universe?
‘X-Men: Days Of Future Past’ opens May 24th.
