As if fans didn’t go crazy enough in 2012 because they saw Earth’s Mightiest Heroes assemble for the first time on the big screen in ‘The Avengers’, they went absolutely nuts during the post-credits scene when the familiar purple jaw line of Thanos sported a sinister smile. Since then, many have wondered when we’d finally see the Mad Titan in action in the Marvel Cinematic Universe. After the title of Joss Whedon’s follow up was revealed to be ‘The Avengers: Age of Ultron’, the only logical option was that he would pop up in James Gunn’s ‘Guardians of the Galaxy’. In the past, Gunn has confirmed that the intergalactic menace would play a part in his movie. He even said that the character would be motion-captured for the upcoming sci-fi summer blockbuster before playing a big role in ‘The Avengers 3’. Now, Marvel Studios head Kevin Feige has recently shared some comments about Thanos which backs up what Gunn has been saying.

In the most recent issue of Empire Magazine, Feige discussed the inclusion of one of the biggest baddies in the Marvel cosmos in the next Phase Two film scheduled for the end of summer. Naturally, he didn’t have much to say on the topic because the House of Ideas likes to keep secrets, but he did reveal that an actor has landed the role of Thanos:

“There is an actor. I’m not sure we want to announce it yet.”

Based on his choice of words, one has to assume that Damion Poitier, who portrayed the villain in ‘The Avengers’, won’t be reprising his role, though you never know with Marvel. I mean, look how Paul Bettany is set to go from playing JARVIS to playing The Vision in ‘The Avengers: Age of Ultron’. With convention season recently kicked off, we’re bound to get some sort of announcement from Marvel that could potentially include the identity of this mystery actor. But until then, Feige goes on to discuss where ‘Guardians of the Galaxy’ fits in the larger Marvel Cinematic Universe:

“Guardians will feel and seem the most separate. But in a summer where people are going to see a lot of sequels, some of which are ours, and a lot of reboots and familiar faces, we were excited about the idea of bringing something new and totally unexpected to the screen.”

If Damion Poitier doesn’t reprise his role from ‘The Avengers’, who do you think will play Thanos in ‘Guardians of the Galaxy’ and beyond? How do you feel about Kevin Feige’s latest comments? Share your thoughts in the comments below.

‘Guardians of the Galaxy’ starring Chris Pratt, Dave Bautista, Zoe Saldana, Vin Diesel, Bradley Cooper, Lee Pace, Karen Gillan, Benicio Del Toro, and Michael Rooker blasts off on August 1, 2014.
