Dark lady Maleficent, the evil fairy that menaced Disney’s ‘Sleeping Beauty’, transitions to live action in May, embodied by the perfectly-cast Angelina Jolie.  Jolie has already displayed her sharp cheekbones perfectly meshing with her haunting yellow contact lenses and stylized horns.  Now we get to witness another supernatural feature: her wings.

Disney unveiled the banner above, showing these ebony wings in all their glory (click for a larger view).  And below, USA Today displayed a closeup:

This is something of a more au naturale look for Maleficent, with more natural skin color, loose hair, more natural looking eyes and pointed ears, which were concealed within her cowl/helmet in previous clips.  She’s still got those cheekbones, though.

Check out the new teaser trailer below:

Discussing being rigged up in her flying harness, Jolie explained “You’re almost like a puppet with all these people moving (beneath you).  When you go to the left or the right all of you have to move together. It’s a big dance with a lot of people.”

She described her workout regimen, prescribed to her by longtime stunt coordinator Eunice Huthart.  “She made me do yoga. And I have no patience for yoga.  It’s not something I do easily, because I’m not a still person. But I was forced to do yoga because (to fly) you have to have your core strength to be able to hold yourself.”

Despite disliking her workouts, Jolie feels it was worth it on some level.  “I feel like the luckiest girl in the world that I get to fly,” she says with a laugh. “I really feel like I’m flying!”

‘Maleficent’ is set for a May 30 release and co-stars Elle Fanning and Sharlto Copley.

‘Maleficent’ explores the untold story of Disney’s most iconic villain from the classic ‘Sleeping Beauty’ and the elements of her betrayal that ultimately turn her pure heart to stone. Driven by revenge and a fierce desire to protect the moors over which she presides, Maleficent cruelly places an irrevocable curse upon the human king’s newborn infant Aurora. As the child grows, Aurora is caught in the middle of the seething conflict between the forest kingdom she has grown to love and the human kingdom that holds her legacy. Maleficent realizes that Aurora may hold the key to peace in the land and is forced to take drastic actions that will change both worlds forever.

Are you excited to see Jolie take flight as Maleficent?  What other Disney characters should make the transition to the big screen?
