Michael Wilkinson was nominated for an Academy Award for designing the period costumes for ‘American Hustle’ but now he’s turning his sights to the world of super heroics by working on the sequel to ‘Man of Steel’, ‘Batman vs. Superman‘.  Prior to the Oscars, he discussed working on the comic book-inspired epic.

“I designed the new Batsuit.  I’m designing the new Wonder Woman costume, I’m tweaking the Superman suit, so yeah; I’m glad [to be hearing] good buzz about it.”

Director and comic book fan Kevin Smith has already raved about the Batman suit, which is rumored to be inspired by the graphic novel ‘Batman: Noel’.  It was previously reported that Wonder Woman’s costume would be more armored than her traditional “bathing suit” look.

Wilkinson commented regarding designing the outfit for the most important female figure in comics for the big screen:

“It’s a thrilling and slightly scary prospect of course. It’s so important to get her right. She really deserves to be presented on-screen in her full glory, so what I do is look at the history of the character has been presented on the big-screen, small-screen, comic books, and graphic novels; we process it all. Then we kind of put that aside and work out what it right for our film, for the cinematic universe that our director Zack Snyder is putting together. We try to create a Wonder Woman relevant for today’s audiences.”

Wonder Woman’s costume has always been a heated topic.  Lynda Carter certainly pulled it off flawlessly, but in more modern times, many fans want something more practical.

Wilkinson went on to add:

“I mean, you just have to look at the gladiators from ancient Rome, they did their thing … with the shield and everything. Yes, it works for Thor and 300, so let’s see what happens.”

Here’s the video of the interview:

So does that mean that they will be staying somewhat close to the source material?  A few years ago, DC tried putting Wonder Woman in a “practical” outfit designed by Jim Lee and fans mostly recoiled from the 90s-ish pants and jacket look.  When the New 52 launched, originally, plans were for Wonder Woman to wear leggings, but before the actual relaunch occurred DC switched to her wearing trunks with bare legs like her traditional outfit.

How do you want Wonder Woman to look like in the upcoming film?
