With casting rumors for ‘Star Wars: Episode VII‘ ranging everywhere from Benedict Cumberbatch (‘The Hobbit: The Desolation of Smaug‘, ‘Sherlock’) to Dame Judi Dench (‘Pirates of the Caribbean: On Stranger Tides‘, ‘Skyfall’) to Saoirse Ronan (‘The Host‘, ‘Hanna’), it’s good to see that another Hollywood heavyweight that genre fans love has been in talks for the film. While Ronan may have mentioned that everyone in Hollywood has auditioned at this point, it’s hard not to get excited to hear that Gary Oldman (‘RoboCop‘, ‘The Dark Knight Rises‘) has been in talks about a role in the film also.

Here’s what he had to say in an interview with Sky Movies:

Well, clearly he doesn’t say all of that much. While it’s directly from the horse’s mouth, Oldman only really confirms that he’s been called about ‘Episode VII’ and really not much else aside from “I’m more cynical about it now… I’ll believe it when I’m on the plane home.”  That’s probably the right kind of attitude to have towards being in one of the next major motion picture releases of all time, even when J.J. Abrams (‘Star Trek Into Darkness‘ ,’Super 8‘) has promised to be more open about the film’s progress than he has been with past works.

While the actor has long been underrated, his recent starring roles in huge films such as ‘Harry Potter’, ‘The Dark Knight’, ‘RoboCop’ and ‘Planet of the Apes’ really leaves him in a perfect position to star in another franchise film. The next step should be science fiction – specifically this or the next ‘Star Trek’, movie if you ask me.

If Oldman landed a job in the series who would you like to see him as? A leader in the New Republic? A Sith Lord? An Imperial commander who is clinging onto the world he rose to power in? Share your thoughts below!
