The ‘Iron Man 3’ Blu-ray release featured one hell of a bonus feature — a completely original short starring Hayley Atwell, reprising her role as Agent Peggy Carter, from ‘Captain America: The First Avenger’. It was previously rumored that Marvel was inching toward developing a television series based on the character, depicting the formation of S.H.I.E.L.D., Marvel’s massive espionage agency currently being showcased on ABC’s ‘Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D.’ (which, unfortunately, hasn’t proven to be the TV equivalent of Marvel’s cinematic crowd-pleasers). Will Agent Carter’s series prove more enticing to audiences?
‘Reaper’ creators Tara Butters and Michele Fazekas have been signed to write and executive produce the series, as part of their overall development deal with ABC. They currently have a new series set to debut, ‘Resurrection’ on which they serve as showrunners.
While ‘Reaper’ wasn’t a smash hit, it was popular enough to last two seasons and still has its devoted fanbase. The pair have also worked on other genre favorites, such as ‘Dollhouse’ and ‘Terra Nova’.
It was recently announced that Marvel was crafting shows starring Daredevil, Luke Cage, Iron Fist and Jessica Jones for Netflix. It was also announced that Ben Kingsley will be reprising his role as ‘The Mandarin’ in another one-shot, ‘All Hail the King‘, that will be included on the ‘Thor: The Dark World’ Blu-ray release. Could this indicate that Marvel thinks that Trevor Slattery could support a TV series at some point? Ben Kingsley is such a well respected actor and a genuine movie star, and other movie actors have transitioned successfully to TV.
Will Marvel eventually conquer TV the way it has movies? Would you be interested in a period series starring Peggy Carter forming S.H.I.E.L.D.? What other Marvel concepts would make for good TV shows? Comment below!
