A release date has not yet been decided for Showtime’s new Victorian literary horror series ‘Penny Dreadful’ but a new teaser has been released. The series features classic literary characters like Dr. Frankenstein, Dorian Gray and characters from Dracula. The new trailer shows the aftermath of some… entity’s escape, most likely Frankenstein’s Monster and voice over by two men discussing this strange reinterpreted world, a “world less constrained by what we call truth… where science and superstition walk hand-in-hand.”
It’s still vague, so we don’t get much insight into the nature of the show. It sounds intriguing, but it’s very close to the same concept as ‘League of Extraordinary Gentlemen’ and while that comic was great, the movie adaptation was horrible, so this could go either way.
‘Penny Dreadful’ was created by Academy Award-nominee director/producer John Logan and executive produced by Academy Award-winner Sam Mendes. The pair worked together on ‘Skyfall’. It stars Josh Hartnett as Ethan Chandler, Eva Green as Vanessa Ives, Timothy Dalton as Sir Malcolm, Rory Kinnear as “The Creature”, Helen McCrory as Madame Kali and Billie Piper as Brona Croft. With ‘True Blood‘ ending, perhaps this show will fill that niche as Logan describes the show as being “highly erotic” and “very bloody.” He further went on to discuss his formulation of the show, stating “When I was first talking to Sam Mendes about it, the word I came up with was disturbing. It’s not enough to scare people because that’s a cheaper sensation. But to unsettle and disturb people on a deeper level because they feel familiarity with monstrous characters is really our goal.”
