Before the modern era of superhero movies, there were a number of films in the genre that failed so gloriously that they’ve almost become legendary. One such film is the unmade Tim Burton Superman film starring Nicolas Cage titled ‘Superman Lives’. Another is the unreleased ‘Fantastic Four’ movie from veteran filmmaker and producer Roger Corman. While they’ve always been discussed around the comic shop or on the floor at conventions, the general public never really paid any mind towards these ultimately unsuccessful attempts to bring these comic book characters to life. But recently they’ve been brought back into the spotlight thanks to some documentary filmmakers looking to get these stories told. Now, just as Burton’s Big Blue was the focus of ‘The Death of Superman Lives’, the first film featuring the first family of Marvel comics is the subject of ‘DOOMED! The Untold Story of Roger Corman’s The Fantastic Four’.
In an effort to retain the fights of Mister Fantastic, the Invisible Woman, the Human Torch, and the Thing, German producer Bernd Eichinger hired Corman to make a low-budget superhero movie in 1992. However, after all the work was completed, the studio shelved the project and it was never released. Now, while the film might be found at comic conventions across the country, there remains a number of conspiracy theories circulating as to why it never reached it’s intended audience. Filmmaker Marty Langford set out to find the true story behind the mysterious circumstances surrounding ‘The Fantastic Four’ and the result was ‘DOOMED!’.
