There’s a whole lot of change coming to the Marvel Universe with the dawn of All-New Marvel NOW. The initiative designed to bring in new readers finds titles like ‘Wolverine’, ‘Captain Marvel’, and ‘Hulk’ being relaunched with new #1s. We’re even supposed to get a new volume of ‘Amazing Spider-Man’ with the real Peter Parker back under the mask. However, in addition to some books starting over, we’re also set to get some brand new comics to grace the shelves of our local comic book stores. This week alone, we’ve seen the releases of ‘Avengers World’ and ‘Black Widow’. In the coming weeks, we’ll see more new series like ‘Ms. Marvel’, ‘Loki: Agent of Asgard’, and ‘All-New Invaders’. But now, another new ongoing series has been announced that reintroduces True Believers to a hero that will soon be joining the Marvel Cinematic Universe.

After word got out that Danny Rand would be one of four heroes getting their own TV shows on Netflix just two months ago, the kung-fu warrior known as Iron Fist is now set to get an all-new ongoing comic series titled ‘Iron Fist: The Living Weapon’. Writer, artist, and filmmaker Kaare Andrews returns to Marvel after a stint in Hollywood for the series that finds the hero returning to the mystical land of K’un-Lun, the place where he trained in the martial arts and became the man he is today, because “he is not connecting with life, and he doesn’t know why,” as Andrews says. “When you become a living weapon, that’s a weapon that cuts both ways.” Marvel Editor-In-Chief Axel Alonso shared with Hero Complex what he was looking for when he brought the ‘Spider-Man: Reign’ creator onto this project:

“The way I looked at Iron Fist, I thought … I’d love to have someone come in and tell a movie, just treat the reader like they’ve stepped into a cinema, they’re sitting down in a seat, the lights go down, the curtain comes up.”

And who better to do that than Andrews, who not only directed ‘Cabin Fever: Patient Zero’ and a segment in ‘The ABCs of Death’ but also has a history with Iron Fist. Back when Matt Fraction and Ed Brubaker were writing ‘The Immortal Iron Fist’, Andrews provided covers for the run. But this time, now that he’s the creative mind behind the former partner of Luke Cage, he’ll be writing, penciling, inking, coloring, and providing covers. Alonso continues by explaining the state of mind we’ll be finding Danny Rand in once this book debuts in April:

“Danny has always resided uneasily in both worlds. Both in the Eastern world of K’un-Lun and in the Western world as a successful industrialist. So this story is a chance for him — when he’s not kicking and punching — to come to terms with who he is and where he stands in the universe, spiritually and physically.”
