In 2 short days, Whovians around the world will be settling down to watch the traditional ‘Doctor Who’ Christmas episode. But this will not be your ordinary (if there ever was such a thing) episode as this year will mark the end of the 11th Doctor’s (Matt Smith) reign and the beginning of a new Doctor played by Peter Capaldi.
‘The Time of the Doctor’ will be the end of a trilogy of sorts that was started with last season’s cliff hanger ‘The Name of the Doctor’. Here, we were introduced to not only the place where the Doctor meets his death (Trenzalore) but it was also revealed a regeneration occurred that was previously unbeknownst to fans that brought the War Doctor (John Hurt) into existence.
The second part of the “trilogy”, ‘The Day of the Doctor’, answered the question of what happened during the Time War that made the NuWho Doctors the way there were and set up for what fans will now see in this Christmas episode.
In ‘The Time of the Doctor’, questions that were brought up during Smith’s tenure as the Doctor will hopefully be answered. Who exactly is the Silence? What question must never be asked? Why use River Song as the Doctor’s assassin?
And most of all, the episode will attempt to explain how Smith’s Doctor can regenerate into Calpaldi if all his regenerations were used up?
But it’s not all gloom and doom when it comes to a ‘Doctor Who’ episode. Part of the charm is the whimsical interaction between the Doctor and his companion, Clara, In these two clips from the Christmas episode, Clara obviously needs some help from the Doctor. Not only to have him pretend to be her boyfriend (after all, who wouldn’t want to introduce the Doctor as their boyfriend, right?) but it seems she is a lot more adept at baking a soufflé than a turkey.
The countdown begins to what will be a heart wrenching goodbye and an exciting new chapter in the history of ‘Doctor Who’!
“Orbiting a quiet backwater planet, the massed forces of the universe’s deadliest species gather, drawn to a mysterious message that echoes out to the stars – and amongst them, the Doctor. Rescuing Clara from a family Christmas dinner, the Time Lord and his best friend must learn what this enigmatic signal means for his own fate and that of the universe.
‘Doctor Who: The Time of the Doctor’ will air on BBC America on Wednesday, December 25th, at 9 PM ET.
