It’s been over 15 years since Marvel lost the rights to ‘Conan’ and ‘Red Sonja’ and just as long since these two deadly barbarians crossed paths. Dark Horse and Dynamite have listened to the fans and “because you demanded it” we finally will have a chance to see these two warriors come face to face once again!
The question, though, will be if they are meeting again or meeting for the first time? There is no indication as to if the previous story will somehow be considered canon or if we’ll see have an initial meeting. I suspect though that this will be a fresh meeting between the two and they will start out as enemies and overcome their issues to work together against a common foe. Either that or I’ve just summed up the loose plot outline of the majority of major crossovers that take place between publishers.
The interesting take on this crossover event is that each of the two publishers, Dynamite Entertainment and Dark Horse Comics, will be releasing their own views of the events that unfold. That’s right, we’ll be getting two miniseries! One miniseries from each of the publishers to explain the story how their own character experienced it.
One thing about crossovers that can be annoying is when a different author takes over the writing and you lose a character’s voice. Well, as each publisher’s mini-series will be written by the series’ regular writer that shouldn’t be a problem here. Conan will be tackled by Brian Wood and ‘Red Sonja’ will be taken care of by Gail Simone. This will allow the characters to sound true to how they’ve been written.
The two authors had this to say on the crossover:
Red Sonja“Conan and Red Sonja together are a genre dream team, and I’m looking forward to not only working with Gail on the story, but creating a crossover story that is epic and huge as these things should be,” said Wood about the crossover between the characters, with Simone describing it as “only the crossover that readers have been begging to have for over a decade: the two greatest barbarian adventurers ever created in an epic tale of blood, lust and vengeance.”
The main details of the plot as well as who will be covering the art is still to be announced. We do know that the two crossover series will be released in 2014.
Are you excited to see these two finally see one another again? Do you think they’ll know each other or are we getting a fresh take on the two interacting? What are your thoughts on seeing 2 different versions of the same story? Sound off below!
