We keep hearing tidbits of Ron Moore’s upcoming Syfy show ‘Helix‘ and now have some original cast photos to show off. With Moore’s ‘Battlestar Galactica‘ being such a hit (even with it’s mixed review ending) there are high expectations for how this show will work out. The premise is sound for it’s 13 episode first season though I worry that it might not be strong enough to carry it into a multi-season show.
So far it looks good and I’m heavily reminded of the black goo from ‘The X-Files‘ there. Even the multiple teaser clips have looked amazing. Of course looks aren’t everything as his last show ‘Caprica’ can attest to. Without a solid ongoing plot it may be a show destined to fail. So why do I have a concern about the long term aspect of the show? Well, the only details so far from the synopsis is as follows:
Helix is an intense thriller about a team of scientists from the Centers for Disease Control who travel to a high-tech research facility in the Arctic to investigate a possible disease outbreak, only to find themselves pulled into a terrifying life-and-death struggle that holds the key to mankind’s salvation or total annihilation.
While that does sound like a good concept, if they want to go on there is going to have to be something else at work here. That plot is going to be hard to stretch across multiple seasons without losing some of the dramatic impact. My other concern is that ‘Helix’ it will be up against other series that has the similar plot of a group of people trying to find the cause of a disease: NBC’s ‘Outbreak’ and the Syfy adaptation of ’12 Monkeys’.
