Fans of the ‘Divergent’ series were given a taste of the upcoming film with a short teaser before the trailer hits the airwaves during MTV’s VMAs on Sunday, August 25. A teaser for a trailer? I’ll take it.

The ‘Divergent’ novel, written by Veronica Roth, is set in dystopian Chicago, where society has been broken down into five different factions. Those in Abnegation live humbly, quietly, and plainly, which is where our hero, Beatrice Prior has lived her entire life. The other four factions include Erudite, which holds intelligence in the highest regard; Amity, which exists only for peace; Candor, a faction of brutal honesty; and Dauntless, the bravest of the five groups.

When young adults from each faction reach 16 years of age, they take an aptitude test which decides where each teenager should spend the rest of their life, but Beatrice’s tests are inconclusive, meaning she’s a “Divergent” — one who could belong to more than one faction. The woman testing her urges her to keep this fact a secret, and Beatrice must choose whether to continue living in Abnegation or abandon her family to join Dauntless.

This trailer may not make much sense to those who haven’t read the books, but it’s definitely action-packed and thrilling enough to pique the interests of MTV audiences and beyond. Some worry it will be lumped under the umbrella of other young-adult breakout successes like ‘Twilight’ and ‘The Hunger Games,’ but from the looks of things, it should have no problem standing out from the crowd. There’s the joke around literary circles that you can’t swing a dead young-adult cat these days without hitting some “new” spin on dystopian futures, but this series is pretty engaging, and the few shots we catch a glimpse of, paint a picture strikingly similar to the one Roth herself painted in each of our minds.

‘Divergent’ is set to hit theaters in March of 2014.
