Jeremy Piven, the actor formerly known as Ari Gold, is shooting scenes for the movie formerly known as ‘All You Need Is Kill’ (formerly known as ‘We Are Mortals’).

Based on the manga by Hiroshi Sakurazaka, the Doug Liman-directed science fiction film centers on Tom Cruise as Lt. Col. Bill Cage, an untrained resistance fighter in robot-mecha armor, who gets dumped into a battle with alien invaders with no training or combat experience.  He is quickly killed only to be resurrected to relive his last day over and over, a la ‘Groundhogs Day’, each time becoming better and better equipped to deal with these invading forces.  The movie, which also stars Emily Blunt, has already wrapped principle photography and footage was shown at Comic Con.

Now the cast and crew are back in England filming scheduled reshoots with the ‘Entourage’ actor stepping into a new role of Colonel Walter Marx.  Warner Brothers insists that these reshoots were planned from the start, so this doesn’t appear to be a case of gaping plot holes or scenes that simply didn’t work.  Though unique, it’s probably completely understandable to write in a brand new character and cast him with an actor– Mr. Piven– who just so happened to already be in the vicinity on hiatus from his TV series ‘Mr. Selfridge’.  There is no word on what type of role Col. Marx plays in the overall plot.

Here is the full pre-Piven plot synopsis:

The story unfolds in a near future in which a hive-like alien race, called Mimics, have hit the Earth in an unrelenting assault, shredding great cities to rubble and leaving millions of human casualties in their wake. No army in the world can match the speed, brutality or seeming prescience of the weaponized Mimic fighters or their telepathic commanders. But now the world’s armies have joined forces for a last stand offensive against the alien horde, with no second chances.

Lt. Col. Bill Cage (Cruise) is an officer who has never seen a day of combat when he is unceremoniously demoted and then dropped—untrained and ill equipped—into what amounts to little more than a suicide mission. Cage is killed within minutes, managing to take an Alpha down with him. But, impossibly, he awakens back at the beginning of the same hellish day, and is forced to fight and die again…and again. Direct physical contact with the alien has thrown him into a time loop—dooming him to live out the same brutal combat over and over.

But with each pass, Cage becomes tougher, smarter, and able to engage the Mimics with increasing skill, alongside Special Forces warrior Rita Vrataski (Blunt), who has laid waste to more Mimics than anyone on Earth. As Cage and Rita take the fight to the aliens, each repeated battle becomes an opportunity to find the key to annihilating the alien invaders and saving the Earth.

But with these rewrites and reshoots, that could all be negated!  This could be an entirely different movie now!

What do you think?  Will Jeremy Piven spice up this Tom Cruise scifi pic?  (Geez, where was he for ‘Oblivion‘?)  Does the fact that an entirely new character is being inserted via reshoots bode well or ill?  Comment below!
