Strap in ladies and gentlemen because it’s going to be a bumpy ride. ‘Sharknado’ is getting a theatrical release on August 2nd 2013.

Yes. You read that correctly. ‘Sharknado’ has garnered so much social media attention that it is getting a big screen release. Though truth be told, not everyone was a fan of the movie. However it did well enough because even with all of the bad reviews, Syfy ordered a ‘Sharknado 2‘. Regal is willing to run with the same gamble because they will be screening the original on nearly 200 Regal Cinemas across the nation with midnight showings on August 2nd.

The director of digital marketing for Regal Entertainment group, Chris Sylvia, is betting big on this and says:

“You know how audiences have had fun with ‘Rocky Horror Picture Show’ over the years. If the internet reactions to this film are any indication, then our moviegoers are primed and ready to enjoy ‘Sharknado’ larger than life in cinemas. Regal is proud to be giving our guests this chance to fuel the social media whirlwind by inviting friends to come to the show and tweeting reactions.”

Now ‘Rocky Horror Picture Show’ is not by any stretch the first movie I would think of when I was trying to find something to compare ‘Sharknado’ to. I suppose wanting that kind of an ongoing midnight showing reaction would be great for any movie theater chain, but ‘Sharknado’ isn’t at the top of my list for that.

Regal’s chief marketing officer, Ken Thewes, put his 2 cents in with:

“There’s just something epic about watching these huge beasts on the big screen with your friends and family. The crowd reactions will make for a memorable experience in our theaters.”

With that thought in mind, I could see an ongoing ‘Big B-Movie Monster Night’ but ‘Sharknado’? This wouldn’t be a gamble I would make but we’ll just have to wait and see how it does.

If you’d like to see what ‘Sharknado’ looks like on the big screen, get ready to shell out $12.50 and see if there’s a participating theater near you on this list.

So what’s your plan for August 2nd? Will you be making the trek to see ‘Sharknado’ on the big screen or will you be at home in bed, passed out to the world?
