Marvel’s Phase Two has certainly taken an interesting turn. Now that Joss Whedon’s follow-up to his massively successful 2012 film is called ‘The Avengers: Age of Ultron’, we know that ‘Captain America: The Winter Soldier’ will bridge the gap between the phases and ‘Guardians of the Galaxy’ will feature Thanos and lead towards Phase Three. But what we don’t know is how ‘Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D.’ will factor into this equation. Agent Phil Coulson played a huge part in ‘The Avengers’ and his new show on ABC is set in the Marvel Cinematic Universe, so will he appear in the upcoming sequel?

In an interview with The Associated Press, Whedon addressed the possibility of Clark Gregg’s beloved character showing up in ‘Age of Ultron’ right now:

“He could. Right now it’s not something I’m pursuing because I have so much going on in ‘Avengers 2.’ Finding out that Coulson is alive would be an entire B story. And I already have too much movie. That’s better than the other thing.”

So Coulson is relegated to television for now. That’s fine. But what about the other way around for characters like Samuel L. Jackson’s Nick Fury? Could the Director of S.H.I.E.L.D. be a fixture in the upcoming show? The director indicates that it’s possible, but not all the time:

“But we also have the movies and we have TV and we need to make sure there’s some crossover, but not so much that people go, ‘Well, I don’t need to see that movie. I saw it on TV.’ If we do that (Marvel Studios President) Kevin Feige is going to come after me with a pitchfork.”

While it is a bummer that we likely won’t see Agent Coulson in a Marvel movie for a bit, at least he’s alive again and can possibly pop up in the future. To get your Son of Coul fix, be sure to tune in to ‘Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D.’ starring Brett Dalton, Ming-Na Wen, Iain De Caestecker, Elizabeth Henstridge, Chloe Bennet, and Clark Gregg premieres on Tuesday, September 24, 2013 at 8:00pm on ABC.

‘The Avengers: Age of Ultron’ assembles in theaters on May 1, 2015.
