Let me be very candid here and say that when I wandered into Seth Gabel’s Q&A at Starfest, I wasn’t really expecting much. I could not have been more wrong. If you ever have a chance to see Gabel at a convention, schedule be damned, go see him. Also, be prepared to fall more than a little bit in love with his incredibly charming personality and his humorous, yet humble answers.

Here are the highlights of what you missed at Starfest 2013:

Gothica

We haven’t heard much about this show since it suddenly starting making noise in February, but at Starfest, Gables shed a little light on the situation.

In the pilot for Gothica, which seems like to follow along the same basic concept of Once Upon A Time but using Gothic mythology, Gabel will be playing a character from Poe’s “The Fall of the House of Usher”, namely Roderick Usher.

From the description Gabel gave, the story is going to focus on pieces by the likes of Bram Stoker and Mary Shelley, and will take place in a contemporary but fictional city that the characters in these books create. He also stated that imagery is going to be very surreal.

He also revealed that we can look forward to seeing the show on ABC.

More Arrow?

According to Gables, he’s up for it, and judging by the crowd’s reaction, they are definitely up for it too. Looks like we will might be seeing more of Count Vertigo in the future!

Star Wars

One savvy fan asked, knowing that Gabel has worked with JJ Abrams in Fringe, if he will be working on the movies, and if so, who does he want to play.

Without hesitation, Gabel answered, “Who cares?! Any!” When the fan pushed, trying to at least figure if he would prefer to be on the dark or light side, Gabel smiled and responded “Oh. I swing on both sides of the force.”

An Inspiring Message about Lincoln from Fringe

The best moment of the Q&A was when Gabel explained his thinking about the two Lincolns on Fringe. He stated that when the Alternate Lincoln, at original Lincoln’s death, realized there was no specific event that was different in their lives that would make them the two different people that they were, Alternate Lincoln understood that it was all about choices, and therefore he needed to choose to be a better, more courageous man.

So, if you’re wondering why he loses the glasses, it’s because he’s starts being more like his other Prime universe counterpart.

Gables then goes on to say that is what the loved most about Lincoln. It showed that you can choose to be another person.

Deepest Acting Desire?

It took only a moment for Gabel to reflect on this answer before he answered that he wants to be British, or to be more succinct, he wants to be British so he can play parts that involve sword wielding. He made it very clear that he very much wants to steal parts from people on Game of Thrones, but can’t do it because of the lack of Britishness.

Anne Hathaway

Gabel revealed that he once kissed Anne Hathaway, not that she’d remember. Once auditioned as a Prince for an undisclosed movie, though I think it’s safe to say it was probably Princess Diaries 2,  he had a chemistry test with the actress to see if there was fireworks. He confessed that he was too green to do it properly, and spent most of the time freaking out about whether he was actually supposed to kiss her or not. Obviously, there must not have been fireworks, because we have no Seth Gabel/Anne Hathaway movies.

All and all, the Q&A with Seth Gabel was an unexpected surprise and one that I’m glad I wandered into!
